OVERVIEW

AFOP is the proud sponsor of the National Farmworker  Training Program (NFTP), which provides multiple occupational health safety training topics to the farmworker community.  This is possible thanks to the support and funding of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

NFTP is implemented through AFOP’s member organizations in multiple states.  Each year the number of states and the number of trainers varies based on our member’s capacity to have staff to provide the trainings.

Training Topics

AFOP’s Health & Safety National Farmworker Training Program (NFTP) strives to empower the farmworker community through health and safety education, resources, and advocacy.  This is possible, thanks to AFOP’s network of 230 trainers who provides multiple occupational health and safety training topics to the farmworker community, including:

  • Worker Protection Standard (WPS)
  • Pesticide Safety-Take-Home Exposure Prevention (LEAF)
  • Pesticide Exposure & Pregnancy
  • Jose Aprende Sobre los Pesticidas (Jose Learns About Pesticides)
  • Heat Stress Prevention
  • Tractor Safety
  • Chemical Hazard Communication

Training Techniques

AFOP Health & Safety Programs is known for quality, culturally appropriate training and curricula, that use innovative, low-literacy training techniques to communicate vital health information to farmworkers. Our programs focus on using adequate multilingual interactive training techniques to increase farmworkers engagement to the topic in order to ensure knowledge transfer, as well as, behavior change.

The majority of farmworkers in the U.S. speak Spanish as their primary language. To complement trainings, bilingual English-Spanish materials are made available for farmworkers and the community-based organizations that serve them.  In the past years we  have been able to translate our training materials into Haitian-Creole, Mixteco and Burmese.

Special Events

AFOP Health & Safety annually coordinates the following three awareness events/activities for migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their employers.

  • National Long-Sleeve Shirt Drive– Held during the National Farmworker Awareness Week in March.   With this event, we hope to raise awareness of the serious health effects of pesticide exposure and heat-related illness while collecting and distributing long sleeve shirts to the farmworker community.
  • National Women’s Health Week– Held annually in May, AFOP holds an awareness campaign to draw attention to the dangers of pesticide exposure to farmworker women and their unborn children. The campaign includes a training marathon of LEAF and PEP training and a week-long social media blitz.
  • National Heat Stress Prevention Training Marathon– Held annually in July. With this event, we hope to spread awareness about the serious effects of heat exposure mixed with pesticide exposure.
