AFOP's member organizations train farmworkers for stable, year-round employment in or outside of agriculture. In 1995-96, our membership included 52 private, not-for-profit organizations and public agencies funded under Title IV, Section 402 of the Job Training Partnership Act. Our members are located in 49 states and Puerto Rico, have 450 field offices, and serve 45,000 farmworkers yearly with education, job training, placement, English language, pesticide safety instruction, and other support services. These support services can include housing, child care, food and medical care, transportation and relocation, and emergency and other disaster assistance. The supportive services provided are designed specifically to address the special needs of farmworkers in each member's locality.

The grants members receive from the federal government allow them to develop a comprehensive set of services that will meet the needs of families and individuals in transition from seasonal agricultural work to year-round, full-time work. Completing an education, learning the English language, getting adequate nutrition, learning how to protect yourself from exposure to pesticides, finding adequate medical care, getting to the next farm job in the next state, making sure your child gets an education--even while migrating--these are some of the barriers to employment that AFOP's members help farmworkers overcome.

With funding from a variety of agencies, members can work on providing safe and sanitary housing, helping to establish Head Start programs for preschool children, referring individuals to migrant health clinics, and training farmworkers to fill specialized year-round job vacancies within the labor market. AFOP members are like conductors, orchestrating a symphony of programs that mean more productive, healthier, better educated lives for farmworkers. These organizations have operated consolidated, "one-stop" centers of services for migrant and seasonal farmworkers--many for more than 20 years.

AFOP members use funds allotted by the United States Congress to the U.S. Departments of Labor, Agriculture, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, and Education, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency. Complex legislation and regulations control these allocations and the methods by which new services are delivered.

Membership in AFOP offers a staff in Washington that keeps them informed. With AFOP, farmworker programs have a place to turn with their questions. And we find them the answers and facilitate the sharing of solutions to achieve greater efficiency, cost effectiveness, and improved quality of services for farmworkers.
