Project HOPE
Health and Outreach with Pesticide Education
What is Project HOPE?
In 2006, with funding from the
EPA, AFOP has launched an expansion of SAFE (Serving America's Farmworkers
Everywhere), Project HOPE (Health and Outreach with Pesticide Education).
Project HOPE operates in AFOP member organization sites, providing pesticide
safety education to farmworkers using member agency outreach staff.
Project HOPE sites have been located in Indiana, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio,
and Washington.
Project HOPE trainers provide
a free service helping growers comply with the EPA Worker Protection Standard
while helping farmworkers protect themselves from pesticide exposure. They work
in rural, community-based organizations in states from coast to coast and many
come from farmworker families.

HOPE sites for a training?
A three-person team in AFOP's
national office administers the SAFE Program and Project HOPE, providing
training, an EPA-approved curriculum, pesticide safety training supplies,
program evaluation and support services. Trainings by the AFOP staff were
conducted in April, May and June and a total of 55 staff were trained in
effective pesticide safety training for farmworkers.
At the end of October, MET in
Minnesota has trained 740 farmworkers, ROI in Ohio has trained 258 farmworkers,
and TRC in Indiana has trained over 558 farmworkers.
Project HOPE is looking
forward to adding new sites at the start of 2007. The 2007-2008 program
year will commence in early January, with new sites to be trained before the
growing season begins. Interested in having your member agency join the
Project HOPE team? Please email Hope Driscoll, Program Director,
