North Carolina Regional Coordinator

Communications Intern

Title: Regional Coordinator,North Carolina
Location: Kinston, North Carolina

Job Type: Full Time

Description:

AFOP is seeking a dedicated professional to start working immediately as a Regional Coordinator based in Kinston, North Carolina, for their Children in the Fields (CIF) Campaign. This campaign strives to improve the quality of life for migrant and seasonal farmworker children by advocating for enhanced educational opportunities and eliminating discriminatory child labor laws. AFOP’s CIF Campaign has organized NC FIELD, a community coalition in Kinston currently in the process of becoming a federally-recognized non-profit that advocates for North Carolina’s farmworker families. The Regional Coordinator will be supervised by AFOP’s CIF Campaign Engagement Manager, who is based in Washington, DC.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Educate community members and leaders throughout the state about children working in agriculture
  • Work with the media as a spokesperson on issues concerning child labor in agriculture
  • Conduct field research among farmworker youth and their families for AFOP educational materials
  • Seamlessly integrate the state-level advocacy to support the national CIF Campaign goals
  • Serve as NC FIELD’s Executive Director and work directly with the NC FIELD Board of Directors in developing and implementing strategic plans
  • Develop and execute a fund raising strategy to assure a solid foundation of resources, including grant-writing
  • Continue to organize and lead the existing farmworker youth council Poder Juvenil Campesino (Rural Youth Power) to increase understanding of current topics of concern, gain input for expansion of the campaign, and run youth photography and outreach projects

Required Qualifications:

–Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience

–Excellent verbal and written communications skills

–Bilingual in Spanish and English

–Experience with computers and Microsoft Office programs

–Must be available for frequent overnight travel

–Must have a reliable car and valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications: (Not Required)

–Community organizing experience

–3-5 five years of professional non-profit experience

–Proven ability to raise funds from multiple sources

–Experience working with youth leadership development

–Experience with staff development and management

Title: Communications Intern
Location: Washington, D.C.

Description:
The Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs is seeking a communications intern to assist in promoting our message and work in the media.  This position includes exposure to:  non-profit advocacy, policy, public and media relations, as well as all of the administrative functions of such activities. This is a great opportunity to diversify your experience and gain valuable knowledge for a future in the non-profit or communications fields.

AFOP is a non-profit, national federation of 52 non-profit and public agencies.  Our mission is to improve the quality of life for all farmworkers and their families through advocacy, education, and training, utilizing our seasoned national staff and member agencies.  All members operate a U.S. Department of Labor National Farmworker Jobs Programs grant, covering every state (except Alaska) as well as Puerto Rico.  Additionally, AFOP also works on other issues such as child labor in the U.S. and health and safety issues as they relate to farm work. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Compiling and organizing daily news clips
  • Fact checking releases, op-eds, studies, and reports
  • Copy-editing
  • Updating press and media contact lists
  • Assisting with the organization’s blog and social networking operations
  • Conducting research and compiling statistics for editorial and web materials
  • Occasionally drafting statements, blogs, op-eds, and press releases
  • Laying-out website and press materials
  • Assisting  with daily media operations
  • General office work

Required Qualifications:

    –Proficiency in Microsoft Office

    –Strong internet skills and intuition

    –Excellent verbal and writing skills, with special attention to detail

    –Ability to be a team player and to work in a fast-paced environment

    –Flexibility and dedication

    –Interest in human rights and policy

    –Intellectual curiosity

Preferred Qualifications:

    –Experience working with press

    –Knowledge of HTML

    –Knowledge of social-networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube

    –Appreciation for design and formatting

    –Knowledge of Spanish
